ready to drive it off a cliff......

Post by Vinny »

So I cannot get this PS/AC belt tight enough. The manual is saying the belt should have 1/4" of play in one direction for 10lbs of pressure applied to it. It's moving 1/4" with well under 10lbs, and I cannot get it any tighter. I'm putting all my weight on this breaker bar, fighting to find the hidden bolts with one hand, and I just can't get it any tighter.

Somone told me to try another belt, but I have a hard time buying that another brand new belt by the same company is going to be any better.

I am also afraid I am bending my PS pump bracket.

This is really pissing me off. I don't run into problems like this too often, but when I do and on something that retarted I get really angry.

I don't know if there is anything I can do, I just need to vent. My SOHC car with no A/C was so much easier to work on.

um, perhaps you have the wrong size belt? you did say it has an under drive pulley, right? or maybe you stretched the belt you have when you tightened it? or maybe the bracket itself came loose from the block... if worst comes to worst, who needs power steering anyway? Popeye forearms are in this year... :D

derp I'm a fuckin' 'tard!

I thought I had nailed down the difference between PS and alt. belt slippage noise on a 1st gen.... apparently not!

So it's been my alt. making noise the whole time, in fact the one nut from the tension edjuster was GONE. Fortunately I had a M10x1.5 lock nut laying around, so that's that. Probably should have had a lock nut on that one from the factory, but I'm glad it didn't because those triangulated OEM lock nuts would be a bitch to wrench on in that tight of a space. the lock nut I put on it is the nylon-insert type.

Usually when I get that frustrated, it is simply because I am overlooking something. If I woulda been smart enough to at least check the other belt in the first place this would have beenm much simpler. Oh well, ya live and ya learn.

C'mon, I weigh at least 75 lbs! :)

lol... that whole ordeal pretty much sums up my experience with automobile repair. its always the easy, overlooked thing thats causing the problem while you wrestle and cuss the non broken object... i think there is a Murphy's entry about this.

75? i dunno, maybe 69... :D
